Paid interviews online: how much they pay in the US and how to get invited
A paid online interview is a one-on-one video or phone call in which a researcher asks about your habits, work or opinions. On 27 September 2026, 260 remote interviews were open to US residents in our catalog, with a median reward of $90, a median length of 45 minutes and a median hourly rate of $100. You apply through a short screener, and you are paid once the platform confirms the study is complete.
What a paid online interview is
An interview is a conversation between you and one researcher, usually on a video call. The researcher wants to understand how you do something: how you choose a bank, how your team uses a tool, why you stopped using an app. There are no right answers; your real experience is the product.
Some platforms also run interviews led by AI. On Respondent, an AI moderator asks the questions and follows up on your answers at a time that suits you, and Askable describes AI-moderated interviews as well. You do not need to book a slot with a person, and the reward is stated in the study.
How much paid interviews pay
Remote interviews are among the best-paid remote formats in our catalog. In-person interviews pay even more but require travel. Note that the medians below are counted separately: the median reward, the median length and the median hourly rate of individual studies.
| Format | Open now | Median reward | Median length | Median per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| remote interview | 260 | $90 | 45 min | $100 |
| in-person interview | 23 | $165 | 70 min | $150 |
What platforms themselves say about pay
Our numbers sit inside the ranges platforms publish. Respondent names about $40–150 for a remote interview of 30–90 minutes and about $75–250+ for in-person interviews and focus groups. User Interviews names $20–300+ for one-on-one interviews of 30 minutes to 2 hours and says its average study pays over $45.
Pay rises with length and with how rare your profile is. Across all studies open to US residents, those aimed at professionals had a median of $88 for 42 minutes, against $30 for 30 minutes for everyday consumers.
Where US residents find paid interviews
Several platforms recruit interview participants in the US. They differ in who they look for and how they pay.
- Respondent: the largest source of paid studies in our catalog; consumer and professional interviews, remote and in person; paid through Tremendous after the researcher confirms attendance
- User Interviews: interviews, focus groups, diary and in-person studies; says studies pay out within a few days of completion
- CleverX: research with consumers, business and hard-to-reach professionals; says moderated interviews usually pay within 48–72 hours, sometimes 7–10 days
- Askable: recruits in 42 countries including the United States; the platform works in English, and participants choose a gift card or PayPal after completing a study
- dscout: mobile research app whose live missions include video conversations with researchers
How the process works
The exact steps, how completion is confirmed and when you are paid vary by platform, but the general path looks like this.
- create a profile with your job, industry, household, devices and interests
- open a study and answer the screener, a short questionnaire that checks whether you fit; Respondent says its screeners are unpaid
- if selected, pick a time slot and read the instructions: app, link, device, what to prepare
- join the call on time and talk about your real experience
- the platform confirms the study is complete (on Respondent, the researcher confirms your attendance) and pays on its schedule
How to get invited more often
Researchers choose people whose profile matches their brief. You cannot change who you are, but you can make sure the platform knows it.
- fill in the professional part of the profile completely: job title, seniority, company size, tools you use at work
- answer screeners consistently with your profile; User Interviews says it can suspend people who give false information about themselves
- apply soon after a study appears, because studies close once they have enough participants
- keep a few time slots free in your week so you can accept an invitation quickly
Interviews for professionals
In our catalog, studies aimed at professionals had a higher median reward than consumer studies, and professional interviews check who you are. Respondent asks professionals to verify a work email on their company domain; addresses on Gmail and other public services are not accepted for that check.
If you work in IT, finance, healthcare, HR, marketing or run a small business, your job is often the reason you are selected. List it precisely: "IT manager at a 200-person company" matches far more briefs than "office worker".
Setup for the call
Most online interviews are video calls. Prepare the day before: the app from the invitation installed, a charged laptop, headphones, a working microphone and camera, and a quiet room. UserTesting, for example, asks for an upload speed of at least 3.0 Mbps and a working microphone for tests on Windows and Mac computers.
Cancellations and no-shows
For booked interviews, punctuality matters, because the researcher reserves the time for you. User Interviews asks participants to cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, and CleverX names late arrival among the reasons a payout can be delayed or withheld.
It also works the other way. If the researcher does not show up, Respondent says the researcher is still expected to pay: message them through the platform with the date and time, and contact support if the status does not update.
When the money arrives
Payout timing differs by platform, so check it before you count on the money.
| Platform | When | How |
|---|---|---|
| Respondent | about 7–10 business days after attendance is confirmed | Tremendous, minus 5% or $1, whichever is greater |
| User Interviews | within a few days of completing a study | as stated in the study |
| CleverX | usually 48–72 hours, sometimes 7–10 days | Tremendous options including gift cards, bank transfer and PayPal |
| Askable | after the study is marked complete | gift card or PayPal, your choice |
Interviews compared with other formats
If you are deciding where to spend your time, compare formats by what they paid per hour, not per study. In our snapshot, remote interviews paid more per hour than remote surveys and unmoderated tasks.
| Format | Median reward | Median per hour |
|---|---|---|
| remote interview | $90 | $100 |
| remote survey | $25 | $80 |
| remote task without a moderator | $30 | $60 |
| in-person interview | $165 | $150 |
Mistakes that cost invitations
Common avoidable mistakes cost invitations more often than people expect.
- answering a screener differently from what your profile says, for example a different job title or company size
- applying days after a study appeared, when the slots are already taken
- booking a slot and then missing it or joining late
- giving one-word answers in the session: researchers need examples from your own life
- joining from a noisy place or a phone with a weak connection when the invitation asked for a computer
Tips for AI-moderated interviews
AI-moderated interviews feel different from talking to a person, and Respondent gives specific advice for them.
- sit in a quiet place with a stable internet connection
- make sure your face is well lit if the camera is on
- answer in full sentences rather than yes or no, and take your time
- think aloud if it helps you explain what you do and why
Questions and answers
How much do paid online interviews pay?
Remote interviews open to US residents had a median reward of $90, a median length of 45 minutes and a median hourly rate of $100 on 27 September 2026. Respondent names about $40–150 for a 30–90 minute remote interview.
Are paid research interviews legit?
Many are offered through established research platforms such as Respondent, User Interviews, CleverX and Askable. Check the platform, and never pay for the promise of work or a reward: the FTC calls that a sign of a scam.
How long is a paid research interview?
Respondent cites 30–90 minutes for a remote interview; in our catalog, the median remote interview open to US residents lasted 45 minutes.
Do I need to be a professional to get paid interviews?
No. Consumer interviews are common too, but professional ones pay more: a median of $88 against $30 across studies open to US residents.
What is an AI-moderated interview?
An interview where an AI asks the questions and follow-ups instead of a person, at a time that suits you. Respondent and Askable both describe this format.
Do online interviews pay better than surveys?
Per hour, yes in our snapshot: remote interviews open to US residents had a median of $100 an hour, against $80 for remote surveys and $60 for unmoderated tasks.
Can I do paid interviews from my phone?
Sometimes. Many interviews are video calls from a computer, and the invitation states the device. Mobile-first platforms such as dscout run missions in a phone app.
