Making money online from your phone: what actually works
You can genuinely earn from a phone with app and website tests, diary studies, mobile game testing and microtasks. UserTesting, Userlytics, dscout and PlaytestCloud have iPhone and Android apps, and Clickworker works on any device. Each platform has its own requirements for system version, free storage and battery level. Some studies need a computer, so a phone is a good start but not full access.
What you can do on a phone
A phone works for four formats. Each pays differently and asks for slightly different things.
| Format | Platforms | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| app and website tests | UserTesting, Userlytics | complete tasks while thinking aloud; the phone records screen and voice |
| diary studies | dscout | capture photos and videos over several days and answer questions |
| mobile game testing | PlaytestCloud | play while commenting in English, then fill in a survey |
| microtasks | Clickworker | small jobs: AI training, surveys, voice and photo tasks |
| surveys | UserTesting, Prolific | answer questions with no recording |
Phone requirements compared
Before signing up, check your phone’s system version. Requirements as of 11 September 2026:
| Platform | iPhone | Android | Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| UserTesting | latest two iOS versions | Android 8.0+ | 400 MB free, at least 20% battery |
| Userlytics | iOS 16+ | Android 9+ | Userlytics app |
| dscout | iOS 14+ | Android 8.0+ | dscout app, camera for photos and videos |
| PlaytestCloud | iOS 16+, iPhone 8 or newer | Android 10+, some models excluded | onboarding checks your device |
UserTesting on a phone
To apply from a phone you download the UserTesting app from the App Store or Google Play. The practice test on a phone also runs through the app: you allow screen and microphone recording, complete a few tasks and narrate aloud. UserTesting specifically warns you to follow the recording permission prompts carefully on Android, and to reinstall the app if something is not working.
UserTesting’s marketing page lists stricter requirements than its applicant FAQ: Android 10 or later, and it advises against Xiaomi phones because it has seen issues with them. If you have a Xiaomi or an older Android, keep that in mind before applying, since you can reapply only once.
Diary studies: your phone as a camera
In a dscout diary study you complete a researcher’s tasks in the app over several days or weeks, answering questions and submitting photos or videos of yourself and your habits. You need an iPhone on iOS 14 or later or Android 8.0 or later. Payment goes through PayPal.
The format is convenient because the tasks fit into your ordinary day. But be ready to show yourself and your surroundings on camera: most diary tasks cannot be done without it.
Mobile game testing
PlaytestCloud pays for game testing: typically $5–9 for a 15-minute playtest with a survey, with no payout threshold. First you pass an unpaid onboarding that checks both you and your device, including whether recording works. The platform publishes a separate list of compatible devices.
During a test you talk in English, record in a quiet place and complete all in-game tasks. One trap PlaytestCloud warns about directly: if a payment prompt appears in the game and you enter your card details, it is a real payment, and it will not be refunded.
Microtasks on Clickworker
Clickworker says its platform works on all your devices, and it has a phone app. Tasks include AI training, surveys, voice recordings, photo contests and short videos shot on your phone.
A handy detail if your connection is patchy: an accepted job is reserved for you for a fixed time, so you can do it offline and submit it when you are back online. Payouts are weekly: to PayPal from 10 euros, to Payoneer from 20 euros or dollars.
Where a phone is not enough
Prolific has no mobile app, only a website. It opens in a mobile browser, but many studies require a specific device, and Prolific advises checking the study description before you start. It also offers the Prolific Assistant browser extension for desktop so you do not miss new studies.
Moderated tests and interviews more often need a computer with a camera: TestingTime says most remote studies need a laptop with a working camera, and UserTesting has separate memory and screen requirements for desktop tests. So if you plan to earn regularly, a laptop opens up more studies.
How much you can earn from a phone
Most platforms do not publish exact rates, but there are benchmarks. PlaytestCloud: typically $5–9 for 15 minutes of play plus a survey. dscout advises its clients that most usability tests pay between $10 and $50. In our catalogue a typical paid study pays $40, and half of all studies pay between $20 and $95.
The format affects not only the amount but also how regular the work is. Invitations depend on your profile and country: PlaytestCloud, for example, hands out playtests mainly by location. It says plainly that the next invitation is hard to predict and that this is not a full-time job but a way to make some money on the side.
iPhone or Android
None of the platforms prefers one system, but version requirements differ. The strictest in our table is Userlytics: mobile tests need iOS 16 or later, or Android 9 or later. UserTesting accepts only the latest two iOS versions, so an old iPhone that no longer gets updates will not qualify.
On Android the main risk is the manufacturer. UserTesting advises against Xiaomi phones on its page, and PlaytestCloud checks device compatibility during onboarding. If you have a choice, test on a phone with an up-to-date system and enough free space.
How to prepare your phone
A few simple steps that save you from failed tests.
- free up space: UserTesting asks for at least 400 MB
- charge your phone before a test: UserTesting requires at least 20% battery
- turn off notifications and find a quiet place: voice recording is the core of the test
- avoid Bluetooth headphones for the UserTesting practice test, as the platform advises
- grant the app every screen and microphone recording permission it asks for
Confidentiality: what is and is not allowed
When you test from your phone you often see products before release, so platforms set confidentiality rules. PlaytestCloud forbids discussing games you have tested with anyone, online or in person, and taking screenshots or screen recordings unless you are reporting a problem.
It works the other way too: TestingTime says test recordings are kept confidential and never published without your consent. For some studies the client asks you to sign an agreement, such as a non-disclosure agreement or consent to recording. Signing is your choice, but without it you cannot take part in that study.
"Work from your phone" ads: be careful
"Work from your phone, no investment" is a favourite of scammers. The US FTC warns that if someone promises a lot of money in a short time for little work, it is almost certainly a scam. So is a demand to pay for training, a starter kit or a "certificate".
Genuine platforms do not charge you to take part: PlaytestCloud says outright that it will never ask you to pay. If "phone work" starts with you sending money rather than receiving it, close the chat.
Questions and answers
Can I make money online with only a phone?
Yes, partly. UserTesting, Userlytics, dscout and PlaytestCloud have iPhone and Android apps, and Clickworker works on any device. But some studies and interviews need a computer with a camera, and Prolific has no app.
Which phone do I need for UserTesting?
Per the applicant FAQ, one of the latest two iOS versions or Android 8.0 or later, 400 MB of free space and at least 20% battery. The marketing page asks for Android 10 and advises against Xiaomi.
How much does mobile game testing pay?
PlaytestCloud says typically $5–9 for a 15-minute playtest with a survey. The exact amount is in the invitation, and the onboarding is unpaid.
Can I work from my phone offline?
For most tests, no, because the recording has to upload. Clickworker lets you complete an accepted job offline and submit it later while it is reserved for you.
Can I take tests on an old iPhone?
It depends on the platform. UserTesting accepts only the latest two iOS versions, Userlytics iOS 16 or later, and dscout iOS 14 or later. If your iPhone cannot update to the required version, start with a platform with looser requirements.
Is "phone work with no investment" real?
Genuine platforms really do not charge you to take part. But if an ad promises big money for no effort or asks you to pay for training or "activation", that is a scam sign according to the FTC.
