Passive income online: what is real and what is a scam

19 September 2026 · 7 min read

Real passive income needs either money or a lot of work upfront: a deposit or bonds pay interest on what you invested, and a digital product only sells after you have created it. "Passive income with no investment and no work" is most often a scam: the FTC explicitly calls promises of guaranteed income and a "proven system" a sign of fraud. At the start it is more honest to earn for your time and build passive income gradually.

What passive income really is

Passive income is income you do not have to work for every day: interest on a deposit, income from bonds, rent, sales of a product you have already made. But "passive" does not mean "from nothing". Behind every such income there is either capital you invested or work you did in advance.

That is why the phrase "passive income online with no investment" almost always hides a substitution. Either there will be an investment after all — you will be asked to pay for a course, access or a "package". Or the "passive" income turns out to be ordinary work with variable pay. Or it is a scheme where money is made not from a product but from new participants.

Compared: what produces passive income and what it requires

Here are the main things people mean by passive income, and what lies behind each of them.

Red flags: when "passive income" is a scam

The FTC, the US Federal Trade Commission, gives a direct rule: if an offer promises guaranteed income, large returns or a "proven system", it is likely a scam. Another signal is that it is unclear where the income comes from: what is sold, to whom, and why you in particular should be paid.

How to spot a pyramid scheme

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains a Ponzi scheme like this: early participants are paid not from profits but from new participants’ money. At first the payouts really do arrive, which builds trust. But when the inflow of new money slows, the scheme collapses.

The signs of a pyramid scheme, according to the SEC: an emphasis on recruiting, no genuine product, promises of high returns quickly and "easy passive income". The SEC stresses that all pyramid schemes eventually collapse and most participants lose their money. If you are offered passive income for bringing in friends, this is exactly that case.

Apps and "platforms" that promise income for a deposit

A separate variety is apps and websites that promise daily earnings on a cryptocurrency "deposit", "rented computing power" or an "investment package". At first the numbers in your account grow, and sometimes you can even withdraw a small amount. This is the same mechanism the SEC describes: early payouts come from new participants’ money, to build trust and encourage you to invest more.

Check three things: whether the company is registered and licensed for financial services, whether you can withdraw the whole amount rather than just a "bonus", and whether your income depends on inviting friends. If the platform blocks withdrawals "until you reach a level" or asks you to pay a "tax" or "fee" to unlock your funds, it is a scam, and you should not pay anything more.

Why extra caution is needed in Ukraine

Ukraine’s National Securities and Stock Market Commission wrote that at the time of its publication Ukrainian law had no separate definition of a financial pyramid, which made it hard to fight such schemes. For you this means something simple: do not count on the state stopping a project before it disappears with your money.

So the checking falls to you. Honest financial products in Ukraine are offered by banks and licensed market participants, with a contract and clear terms. Offers from messengers, "private clubs" and unlicensed "investment platforms" are a reason to stop.

A deposit: the simplest passive income

A bank deposit is classic passive income: you put money in at interest and do nothing. The risk is small, but the income is limited by the bank’s rate. Remember the tax: interest on deposits in Ukraine is subject to 18% personal income tax and a 5% military levy, 23% in total.

Deposit rates change, so compare the current terms of several banks on their websites before opening one. The main limit of a deposit as passive income is that you need capital: on a small sum the interest will be modest.

Government bonds and military bonds

OVDP are domestic government bonds, debt securities issued by the state. The government sells them to primary dealers and their clients, which can include private individuals, to finance the budget. Military bonds can be bought through the Diia app: the face value of one bond is 1,000 hryvnias.

An important difference from a deposit: according to Diia, income and investment gains on government bonds are not included in taxable income. So the formula "18% and 5% on any passive income" is inaccurate: bonds have a separate exemption. Bond yields also change, so check the current terms at the time you buy.

"Semi-passive" income online: content and digital products

Online, passive income often means selling templates, courses, e-books or videos that you created once. This is a real model, but it is more honest to call it semi-passive: first you have to invest a lot of time in the product and in getting buyers to find it, and then keep updating and supporting it.

This route does not pay "tomorrow". It suits people who have a skill they can package and are prepared to work for months without a guaranteed result. And if someone sells you a "ready-made passive business" for a fee, remember the FTC rules: in the US a seller of business opportunities must give you a one-page disclosure document at least 7 days before you pay, and back any earnings claim with a separate document required by law.

An honest start: earning for your time

If you do not have capital yet, it is more honest to start with income for your time rather than looking for "passive" income that does not exist without investment. Paid research, website testing and microtasks need neither money nor experience.

On 19 September 2026 our catalogue had 769 live studies, 621 of them with known pay. Typical pay was $40 per session, half of studies paid between $25 and $100, and the typical length was 30 minutes. It is not passive income, but it is not a scam either: you are paid for an hour of your time rather than paying for a promise.

How to check a passive income offer

Before you invest a single hryvnia or euro, get five answers. Who exactly offers the product, and does it have a licence or registration? Where does the income come from — what exactly will you be paid out of? What happens if new participants stop joining? Is there a contract you can read before paying? Can you withdraw your money at any time, and on what terms?

If even one question has no answer, or the answer sounds like "trust the system", do not invest. It is much easier to lose money in a pyramid scheme than to get it back later through the courts or the police.
