Legit ways to make money online without paying anything: 10 options for 2026

19 September 2026 · 7 min read

You can make money online without investing anything, but it is extra income, not a salary. The simplest legitimate options are paid research and interviews, website and app testing, microtasks, AI training and game testing. In our catalogue a typical paid study pays $40, and half of studies pay between $25 and $100. The main rule: a real job never asks you to pay first.

The main rule: they pay you, not the other way round

Every legitimate way to earn online has one thing in common: you do not buy anything to start. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes the typical scam like this: people are promised thousands of dollars a month for working from home, but instead they pay for "starter kits", "training" or "certifications" that are useless.

Ukraine’s cyber police warn about another common scheme: money for "likes" on TikTok or reviews on Google Maps. At first the scammers really do pay 100–500 hryvnias to win trust, then they invite you into a "work group" and ask for card details on a phishing site. If a job asks you to pay to "unlock" tasks or a payout, it is a scam.

10 ways to make money online without investment

These are options that need no money, no stock and no sales experience. The amounts come from the platforms’ own help pages and from our catalogue.

What pays the most

The highest amounts are paid for conversations with researchers. Respondent says a 30–90 minute remote interview pays roughly $40–150, and in-person sessions $75 to $250 or more. Professionals earn the most: lawyers, doctors, IT specialists and buyers, because their experience is rare.

Microtasks and survey panels pay the least: you count in cents and points. On the other hand, almost anyone can join and start right away. A good strategy is to combine quick small tasks with a few applications for studies that pay more.

How paid research works: from application to payout

A paid study is when a company or academic pays you for your opinion, your experience or a few tasks. The path is almost always the same. You fill in a profile on the platform, see a study and answer a short screener. Screeners are unpaid: Respondent says so directly. If your answers fit, you are invited to a session — a remote interview, a test or a survey.

After the session the researcher confirms your participation and the platform sends the money. At Respondent this usually takes 7–10 business days, with a 5% fee. The more detailed and honest your profile, the more often you are invited: researchers look for specific people and screen out those who answer at random.

Website and app testing: what you need

In a usability test you use a website or an app and say out loud what you think, while the software records your screen and voice. You do not need special knowledge, but you do need a microphone, a quiet place and the language. UserTesting accepts people aged 18 and over who speak fluent English, French or German.

Before admitting you, UserTesting asks you to take a practice test: this is how the platform checks that you narrate your actions clearly. You can only reapply once, so it is worth preparing for the practice test: keep talking, explain what you expect, and do not go silent when something is unclear.

Microtasks and AI training: who they suit

Microtasks are small jobs that take a few minutes: rating a chatbot’s answer, labelling photos, recording your voice, finding data. Clickworker pays weekly, Wednesday to Friday: to PayPal from €10 and to Payoneer from €20 or $20. The amount per task is small, but you can start right after signing up.

AI training on specialised platforms pays more but requires an entry test. DataAnnotation mentions rates from $25–30 per hour for general projects, from $20 for multilingual work and from $50–100 for programmers and specialists. The baseline requirement is a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. If you write code or have a specialist degree, this is one of the best-paying options that needs no investment.

Tax on online income

For a Ukrainian tax resident, money from foreign platforms is foreign income. The platforms do not withhold tax, so you have to declare it yourself: 18% personal income tax and 5% military levy, 23% in total. The annual return is due by 1 May of the following year. Our article on tax from research income covers this in detail with worked examples. If you live elsewhere, check the rules for side income in your country of residence.

What is available from Ukraine

Country is the main limit. Prolific only accepts people who live in the countries on its list, and Ukraine is not on it. UserTesting, by contrast, does not limit the list of countries: what matters is fluent English, French or German and a verified PayPal. PlaytestCloud and Clickworker also work with many countries.

If you live in Poland, Germany or another EU country, you have far more options: platforms look at where you live, not at your citizenship. There is more on this in our article on research from Ukraine.

How much you can realistically earn

The honest answer: a few dozen to a few hundred dollars a month if you apply regularly. On 19 September 2026 our catalogue had 769 live studies, 621 of them with known pay. The typical pay was $40, half of studies paid between $25 and $100, and 177 studies paid $100 or more. The typical length was 30 minutes.

But studies recruit specific people: by country, age, profession and devices. You will not be picked for most of them, and that is normal. Clickworker and PlaytestCloud state plainly that their tasks are not a replacement for full-time work. Count on extra income, not a salary.

How you get paid

Almost all international platforms pay through PayPal, some through Payoneer or gift cards. UserTesting sends money only to a verified PayPal, about 14 days after the test. dscout pays to PayPal in US dollars, Clickworker weekly, to PayPal from €10. Set up your payout method before your first application so your money does not get stuck.

Red flags: how to spot a scam

If you see even one of these signs, stop.

How to start today

You can start in half an hour. First set up and verify PayPal. Then sign up on two or three platforms available in your country and fill in your profile honestly: researchers use it to decide whom to invite. After that, apply every day: new studies appear all the time, and in the week before 19 September 2026 our catalogue added 273 of them.

So you do not have to go through hundreds of platforms by hand, LazyBounty collects studies in one catalogue and shows only the ones that fit your country, languages and profile.
