What fits a weekend: formats compared

Not every format suits a Saturday and Sunday equally. The key question is whether the work depends on someone else’s schedule.

Website and app tests: the best fit for weekends

In an unmoderated test you are alone with the website: you read the task, do it and narrate your actions out loud while the software records your screen and voice. There is no need to agree a time with anyone, so you can do these tests on a Saturday morning or a Sunday evening. On UserTesting you see the amount before you accept a test.

The downside is that tests are scarce and get taken quickly: if an invitation arrives on Friday evening, someone else may take the spot by Saturday morning. So it helps to keep notifications on and check for offers several times a day.

Microtasks: work in 15-minute blocks

Microtasks fill short gaps best: half an hour between errands, a journey on public transport, a Sunday evening. Rating a chatbot’s answer, labelling photos or recording a few phrases takes minutes.

Clickworker pays weekly, Wednesday to Friday: to PayPal from €10 and to Payoneer from €20 or $20. The amount per task is small, so over a weekend you will more likely save up for a small purchase than for a noticeable part of your monthly income.

Interviews and studies: the most money per hour

The highest pay is for talking to a researcher. Respondent says a 30–90 minute remote interview pays roughly $40–150. The researcher sets the interview time but often offers several slots, some of them in the evening or on Saturday. If you work on weekdays, list exactly the hours you are free when you apply.

On 19 September 2026 our catalogue had 769 live studies, 621 of them with known pay. Typical pay was $40, half paid between $25 and $100, and the typical length was 30 minutes. A single study at the weekend can pay more than several hours of microtasks. So it makes sense to apply for studies on weekdays and keep the weekend for the sessions and tests themselves.

Game testing and diary studies

Game testing is a convenient weekend format: PlaytestCloud usually pays $5–9 for a 15-minute playtest with a survey. You play and narrate your thoughts out loud in English, in a quiet place. First the platform asks you to take an unpaid onboarding test that checks both you and your device, so do it in advance, on a weekday evening, to be receiving invitations by the weekend. Invitations arrive irregularly and depend on your country, so do not plan your whole weekend around game testing.

Diary studies on dscout last several days or weeks: each day you answer a few questions and send photos or videos. The platform says most missions pay $25 to $150. This format fits weekends well, when you have time for longer tasks, but you will need to give a little time on weekdays too.

Weekend freelancing: small jobs

On freelance marketplaces it is convenient to take short tasks with a clear result at the weekend: translating a page, small design jobs, editing a text, setting up a website. Large projects with daily contact with the client are harder to combine with a weekday job.

Remember the fee: Upwork charges freelancers between 0% and 15% per contract, and you see the percentage before you send a proposal. Money arrives after the client accepts the work, so freelancing does not give you "fast" weekend money either.

Weekend side jobs from your phone

If you do not have a laptop to hand, you can do part of your weekend side work from your phone. UserTesting, dscout and PlaytestCloud have apps for iPhone and Android, and Clickworker says its platform works on all your devices. On a phone it is easy to test mobile apps, complete diary tasks with photos and videos, play test games and do small microtasks.

But some studies require a computer with a camera, especially moderated interviews and desktop website tests. So if you want to earn regularly, a phone is a good start, but a laptop opens up more offers. Before a test, charge your phone, free up space and turn off notifications so the recording is not interrupted.

What to do if you are not selected

Most study applications end in a rejection, and that is normal: the researcher is looking for people with a very specific profile — by country, age, profession, devices or habits. A rejection does not mean you did anything wrong. The more applications you send, the more often you fall into the right sample.

What genuinely helps: a complete and honest profile, quick answers to screeners and care in every test. Do not answer at random or embellish yourself to pass a screener: platforms check answers, and false information can get your account blocked along with the money you have earned.

How many hours a week it takes

A realistic plan for a busy person is two or three hours at the weekend and 10–15 minutes on weekdays to check for new offers. On weekdays you apply, and at the weekend you do the tests, interviews and longer tasks.

It is important to understand the limits: you will not be picked for most studies, and tests and microtasks appear irregularly. So your free hours do not equal your earnings. Prolific, for example, requires researchers to pay at least £6 or $8 per hour, but that is the rate for the hour of taking part, not a guarantee that every free hour will be filled.

How to plan your weekend to earn more

A few simple habits noticeably increase the number of invitations you get.

• fill in your profile on each platform completely and honestly: it is how you get picked
• turn on notifications so you see new tests and studies straight away
• when applying for interviews, list the evening and Saturday hours when you are genuinely free
• prepare a quiet place, a headset with a microphone and a stable internet connection
• set up and verify PayPal in advance so payouts do not get stuck
• keep a simple spreadsheet: where you applied, what you completed, when to expect money

Tax on side income

For a Ukrainian tax resident, money from foreign platforms is foreign income, even if it is a few dollars over a weekend. The platforms do not withhold tax, so you have to declare it yourself: 18% income tax and 5% military levy, with the return due by 1 May of the following year.
