How research payments work

Who pays, the stages the money goes through, how long each platform takes, and what to do when a payment is late.

Who pays

Payment comes from the platform hosting the study, or from the researcher through it. The money never passes through LazyBounty: we show where studies are and explain the terms, but taking part and getting paid stay between you and the platform.

This matters upfront. A late payment is resolved by the support team of the platform where you took part, and a PayPal withdrawal issue by PayPal support.

The stages the money goes through

On almost every platform the path is the same: taking part, review by the researcher, credit to your balance, cash-out. Delays most often happen at the second step.

On Prolific the researcher first reviews and approves your submission, and only then is the reward credited to your balance automatically. This usually takes a few days. If a submission is not approved within 22 days, Prolific approves it automatically. Money that is still awaiting approval cannot be cashed out.

On Respondent payment follows once the researcher confirms you attended. On TestingTime earnings appear in your wallet after a few days needed to verify your participation.

How long each platform takes

Platforms publish their timelines in their help pages. Count by the rules of the platform in question, not by gut feeling.

Payout methods and fees

The most common method is PayPal. Prolific and UserTesting pay only through it. Others add Payoneer, bank transfers or gift cards. For Ukraine the choice is narrower than for the EU: for example, uTest’s direct Wise transfer is not available there.

Some platforms take a fee from payouts. Respondent deducts 5% of each incentive, minimum $1: $60 becomes $57, $10 becomes $9. For fees and methods in Ukraine in detail, see our blog article on PayPal and Payoneer payouts.

Mistakes that delay your money

Most payout problems come down to small settings.

If a payment is late

First check your participation status in the platform account: often the study is still under review and the clock has not started.

If the window has passed, get in touch. On Respondent, message the researcher on the platform first, then support; Respondent forbids accepting payment off the platform. On Prolific, if 22 days pass without automatic approval, the platform asks you to contact support. Keep the correspondence and proof of participation: without them it is harder to sort out.

And do not forget taxes. UserTesting says it does not withhold tax from payouts, and declaring the income in your country is up to you. You can export your payout history from the platforms and from PayPal.

Questions and answers

When do I get paid for a study?

After the researcher confirms you took part. Then the timing depends on the platform: from 7–10 business days on Respondent to twice a month on uTest.

Why is my money "awaiting approval"?

The researcher has not reviewed your work yet. On Prolific, if they do not within 22 days, the submission is approved automatically.

How do I get paid in Ukraine?

Mostly via PayPal, and on some platforms via Payoneer or gift cards. Direct bank transfers are mostly available only in the EU.

What if a payment has not arrived?

Check the status in your account, count the window by the platform’s rules, then message the researcher or support with the date you took part.
