Best paid research sites for beginners: how to pick your first one

Question 1: where do you live

This is the first and hardest limit. Prolific, User Interviews and Askable have closed country lists: Ukraine is not on them, but Poland, Germany and many other EU countries are. Prolific says outright that your country of residence counts, not your citizenship.

Without country restrictions there are UserTesting, which welcomes contributors from around the world, PlaytestCloud, which you can join from any country, and Userlytics, which only needs PayPal to work in your country. uTest publishes no list of excluded countries.

Question 2: which language do you speak fluently

UserTesting requires fluent spoken and written English, French or German, and you get only one reapplication. PlaytestCloud requires commentary in English, and an onboarding in another language fails. Askable works in English only.

If your English is still weak, start with formats that do not need speaking: surveys and microtasks. Fluent German opens UserTesting and TestingTime. On Prolific you can take a language assessment and receive studies in that language.

Question 3: which device

With only a phone you can test apps on UserTesting, mobile games on PlaytestCloud and do microtasks on Clickworker. PlaytestCloud needs Android 10+ or iOS 16+; UserTesting needs one of the latest two iOS versions or Android 8.0+.

A computer with a camera widens the choice: interviews, focus groups, moderated tests. TestingTime says most remote studies need a laptop with a camera, and Prolific works only through its website.

Question 4: how will you get paid

Most platforms pay through PayPal, and UserTesting and Userlytics pay no other way. Without PayPal you still have uTest with Payoneer, Clickworker with Payoneer or SEPA in the EU, and Respondent and PlaytestCloud with Tremendous gift cards.

For Ukrainians, PayPal currently runs under a special temporary arrangement with no fees for receiving or withdrawing to a card without conversion, valid per its fee table until 30 September 2026 inclusive. Open and verify PayPal before signing up to platforms, not after your first earnings.

Question 5: how long can you wait

Platforms differ widely in how often they invite you, and it is better to know that in advance to avoid disappointment.

• Prolific: new studies appear daily, but they are spread among participants, and after a busy spell you may see fewer for a while
• User Interviews: one or two invitations every six months or year is normal, but the average pays over $45
• PlaytestCloud: outside the USA, the UK and Canada, fewer invitations, less often
• TestingTime: one or two emails a week on average, depending on your country
• Respondent: earnings are not guaranteed or daily, and screeners are unpaid

How to fill in a profile that gets you selected

Every platform selects you by your profile, so fifteen minutes spent on it pay off. The platforms give similar advice.

• Respondent: a full job title, industry, company size, the tools you use and every language you can speak
• User Interviews: an up-to-date job title and city, linked social media, and applications only where you truly fit
• uTest: tick "I don’t have any" for devices and subscriptions you do not own
• PlaytestCloud: list only games you have played extensively and keep your phone model current
• everywhere: screener answers must match your profile, or your chances drop

Realistic expectations about money

Benchmarks from official sources: Prolific guarantees at least £6 or $8 an hour, User Interviews quotes an average of over $45 per study, and in our catalogue a typical study pays $40. But invitations are irregular: TestingTime says plainly that you cannot live on these earnings, and PlaytestCloud that it is not a full-time job.

So set a realistic goal: extra income a few times a month that grows as your profile is completed, your rating rises and you answer invitations quickly.

Your first month: what to expect

The first weeks go on setup: identity verification on Prolific, the practice test on UserTesting, the onboarding on PlaytestCloud, the courses in uTest Academy. Money usually does not arrive during this time, and that is normal.

Then the first invitations appear. Many platforms check quality after your first work: after your first paid test, UserTesting pauses invitations while its Quality Team assigns your first rating. First studies done well open the door to the next ones.

Do not be surprised by quiet weekends. Prolific explains that researchers usually launch studies during their working hours, so weekends and holidays are quieter, and if you have recently completed many studies you may also see fewer invitations for a while. That is not a problem with your account but the way studies are spread fairly among participants.

What beginners should not do

A few mistakes that most often cost people their accounts.

• do not sign up to ten platforms at once: three well-filled profiles are better than ten half-empty ones
• do not overstate your language or experience: TestingTime may block payouts for deliberately false information
• do not use a VPN to get around country limits: Prolific and PlaytestCloud check your location
• do not write answers with ChatGPT: Prolific forbids it
• never pay anyone for access to "work": genuine platforms are free for participants
