Askable review: who can join and how fast it pays

How Askable works

Askable’s help centre describes the participant journey step by step. You sign up on the website or in the app and answer a few initial questions. Then you complete your profile and, in the Explore tab, apply to studies that suit you, which Askable compares to raising your hand. Each application includes questions specific to that study.

Researchers review applications and look for a mix of voices and demographics. If you match, you are invited and then confirm or decline. Online tasks, surveys and AI interviews can start immediately; video calls and in-person sessions are scheduled. After the study, your reward moves through "pending check", "pending" and "rewarded".

Who can take part

Askable recruits participants in 42 countries. In Europe these are Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, plus the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and others. Ukraine is not on the list. The list grows over time, and the platform says it will tell you during sign-up whether your country is supported.

Age is a separate question. The sign-up article says you can become a member from 13, and between 13 and 18 only after a parent or guardian agrees to the terms. At the same time, Askable requires an identity check for paid studies, and both verification methods confirm that you are 18 or over. In practice, you can earn from 18.

No special background is needed: studies look for everyday consumers, professionals and users of specific products.

Identity verification

Askable verifies every participant’s identity through an independent service, Jumio. There are two ways: face detection, which creates a biometric "faceprint", or document verification with a government-issued photo ID such as a passport or driving licence. Face detection is optional; you can always choose the document instead.

The platform explains why: it pays real money and must make sure it pays real, unique people rather than people running multiple accounts. Askable itself never receives your photo or document, only the result of the check and a reference number.

Types of studies

Askable offers several formats, each with its own requirements.

• one-to-one video calls or focus groups, on Askable’s own tool, Zoom, Teams or Google Meet; you need a microphone and webcam
• surveys, usually 5–10 minutes; afterwards, return to your account and mark the study complete
• AI interviews, like a video interview but with an AI researcher asking the questions; completion is marked automatically
• online tasks such as finding something in a menu, card sorting or thinking aloud about a design; if a task takes you outside Askable, mark it complete within 120 minutes of starting
• in-person sessions at the researcher’s office, a public place or your own home
• diary studies over days, weeks or months, which pay more, but you forfeit the whole incentive if you do not finish

How much Askable pays

Askable does not publish pay ranges for participants: you see the amount in the app when you apply. Its help centre for researchers shows how the amount is calculated: how specific or hard to reach the audience is, the study type and effort, the location, local currency and purchasing power, travel time for in-person sessions, and what has worked for similar studies. Clients can agree a higher incentive with Askable to recruit niche audiences faster.

The amount you receive is the incentive advertised when you applied, even if it changed later. AI interviews are paid for completion, not by the hour: if the conversation runs a little longer than estimated, you still get the advertised amount. Partly completed studies sometimes pay less.

How and when you get paid

You choose your reward method in your account settings. Depending on your country, that is PayPal, a GiftPay e-gift card by email, or both. The platform warns that many countries have PayPal only. Incentives are paid in your local currency or, where local payout is not supported, in another currency.

According to the help centre, most payments are released within 4 business days of completing a study. PayPal payments arrive within 5 business days, sometimes up to 7. Some studies require not just a linked PayPal but a verified one. If nothing has arrived after 5 business days, contact support with your email, the study title, the amount and the completion date.

Askable says your earnings count as income and must be declared. You can export your earnings for a year or a custom period from the taxes section of your profile. The platform does not give tax advice.

How to get invited more often

The platform says people with complete profiles are up to four times more likely to be selected. Add your current job to your profile and, to build trust, connect LinkedIn so researchers can verify your profession. In a few countries you can also record a short voice clip about yourself.

Your profile shows two scores. The trust score grows as you verify your identity, complete your profile and take part in studies. The quality score reflects how thoughtfully you answer and becomes available after three studies. AI interviews that run under about 15 minutes may be reviewed, which could affect your account.

Rejections and the waitlist

Askable says outright that a rejection is "almost never about you". Researchers set criteria by location, age, demographics, profession and product use, as well as quotas: once a study has enough people of a certain type, further applications are not considered even if they match.

The waitlist means something else: you matched, but the spots are gone. Spots in invitations go first come, first served, and instant studies such as AI interviews invite more people than there are spots. Your place is secured only once you start and a spot is still open. So keep notifications on and respond quickly.

Rules worth knowing

Askable is strict about dishonesty. For false profile information it can block payments, decline further participation or permanently remove your profile. One account per person, current details, and no answers tailored to fit a study.

• VPNs are not allowed: with one on you simply cannot log in; iCloud Private Relay acts like a VPN and must be turned off too
• you can cancel a session with no penalty at least 24 hours ahead; try asking the researcher to reschedule first
• a rescheduled session arrives as a new invitation that you must confirm, or it will not go ahead
• arrive 5–10 minutes early, find a quiet spot and dress smart-casual

Language

The platform operates in English: sign-up, applications and messages are all in English. You can translate pages with your browser’s built-in translation, and researchers may write screeners and study descriptions in participants’ local language. But for video and AI interviews, realistically plan on English.

Askable for Ukrainians

If you live in Ukraine, Askable is not available to you: the country is not on the list, and a VPN will not get around that, since the platform treats it as masking your location. For people in Ukraine we have gathered the platforms that do work in a separate article.

If you live in Poland, Germany, Czechia, Romania or another listed country, Askable is open to you just as it is to locals. A photo ID works for identity verification, and your payout method will depend on your country of residence.

Pros and cons

Askable is a convenient platform for English speakers living in Europe.
