Data annotation platforms: TELUS Digital, CrowdGen by Appen and Mindrift

Beyond DataAnnotation and Outlier, three large platforms hire freelancers for data annotation: TELUS Digital’s AI Community, CrowdGen by Appen and Mindrift, which took over Toloka’s tasks. None of them publishes a single hourly rate: pay is set per project or per task and shown before you start. They differ most in entry checks and payouts: TELUS requires a language test, an open-book exam and ID verification; CrowdGen pays monthly with fees that depend on the method; Mindrift pays twice a month.

What annotation work actually involves

Data annotation means adding human judgement to data that an AI model learns from or is tested on. On these three platforms the published task lists are similar: rate AI answers or pick the better of two, label and classify texts, judge whether search results, recommendations or ads match a query, review web pages, images and videos against written guidelines, and, on Mindrift, record short videos of everyday activities.

Every task comes with a guideline document, and your work is checked against it. Quality decides how much work you are offered next, which is why all three platforms talk about qualifications and quality standards rather than about hours. TELUS also warns that its evaluation work can include sensitive, upsetting or offensive material, and it is worth reading that line before applying.

The table sums up what each platform states on its own pages. Where a platform does not publish a figure, we say so rather than borrow one from reviews.

TELUS Digital AI Community: country-specific roles and a three-step check

TELUS Digital describes its AI Community as more than a million contributors who collect, enhance, translate and localise content for AI models. You do not join a general pool: you apply to a role posted for a specific country and language, such as “Evaluator – United States”.

That US role shows how strict the entry is. It asks for excellent written and spoken English, at least three consecutive years of living in the United States, familiarity with US business, media, sports, news and culture, active use of Gmail and social media, a computer, broadband and a smartphone running Android 5.0 or iOS 14 or newer. No previous professional experience is required, but you must pass an English language assessment and an open-book qualification exam, and complete ID verification.

Pay is described only as based on tasks completed and project availability, and depends on task volume and on meeting quality and productivity standards. The work is offered as an independent contractor arrangement, so you choose your hours but handle your own taxes. One more rule: only one person per household may take part, and if TELUS finds two, it may remove all associated accounts.

CrowdGen by Appen: monthly pay and fees you can calculate

CrowdGen is the contributor platform of Appen, a company founded in 1996 and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange as APX; it replaced the older Appen Connect. Most projects have a qualification process before you can start. Once you are on a project, you log your hours or units in a “My Work Hours” dashboard, and anything logged moves to “Unpaid Transactions” until the next payment cycle. If the system-tracked hours differ from what you worked, you open a dispute.

CrowdGen states that most earnings are quoted in US dollars and paid in your local currency, and that it will never ask you to pay anything to join a project. Its homepage advertises top rates of more than $100 an hour, with the note that pay depends on location and skills; treat that as the ceiling for experts, not a typical rate.

Payouts go through a provider called Dots. Appen itself charges no fee, but the payout method does, and CrowdGen publishes the amounts. Outside the US, PayPal costs 2% up to a $20 maximum; Payoneer’s standard route costs $0.75 plus Payoneer’s own fees; Airtm costs 2.15%. Local bank transfers have a fixed fee plus a percentage per country. If a payment would be smaller than the fees, CrowdGen holds it until a later month. You can change your payout method at any time except between the 6th and the 15th of the month, while payments are being processed.

Mindrift: where Toloka’s tasks went

If you used Toloka, the tasks and projects from Toloka and Toloka Annotators have moved to Mindrift, and your account, balance and history were transferred automatically. You log in to Mindrift with the same details. Mindrift is run by Toloka AI BV.

The structure has two levels. All-access tasks are open to every member straight after sign-up, and you are paid for each accepted one. By adding your background and passing short qualification tasks you unlock Specialized projects, which need deeper subject knowledge and pay more. Each task shows a fixed reward before you start, and only completed and accepted tasks are paid. Some tasks can be done on a phone.

The task types Mindrift lists are rating AI responses, labelling and classifying drafts, and judging search and recommendation relevance. On 2 November 2026 it was also announcing a video project paying $5 to $15 an hour for recording everyday and work activities with a phone or camera, with no special skills required.

Payouts run twice a month for accepted tasks: work from the 1st to the 15th and from the 16th to the end of the month is paid on the 5th and the 20th, moved for weekends and holidays. You withdraw through Payoneer or through Tipalti, which pays to PayPal. Joining is free.

Where DataAnnotation, Outlier and paid studies fit

DataAnnotation and Outlier focus on writing, coding and expert evaluation of AI answers, and we cover them in separate articles: what microtasks and AI training pay, and how their entry tests work. The three platforms here are a better fit if you want classic labelling, search and content evaluation, or tasks in your own language and country.

Annotation is task work: you are paid per unit or per hour of judging data, often for weeks on one project. Paid research studies are a different market, where a company pays a fixed sum for one interview, test or survey with a person like you. Many people combine both, and the second kind is what LazyBounty collects in one place.

Before you apply: a short checklist

All three platforms are established companies, but the steps that protect your time and money are the same everywhere.

Apply to a role for your country and pass an English assessment, an open-book qualification exam and ID verification. Each role lists its own residency and equipment rules.

How much does CrowdGen charge to pay out?

Appen charges nothing; the payout method does. Outside the US, PayPal takes 2% up to $20, and a local bank transfer to Ukraine costs $0.99 plus 1.16%.
