uTest review: how to earn from testing and cash out

What uTest is and who it suits

uTest is remote testing work in a crowdtesting format. Client companies open test cycles for their websites and apps, and members look for bugs on their own devices, run test cases from instructions and answer surveys about the interface. You do not need a formal qualification, but earnings depend directly on the quality of your reports.

Unlike survey platforms, uTest pays for results, not time. One serious bug can be worth more than an hour of work with no findings. So uTest suits people who pay attention to detail and are ready to learn, not those looking for a guaranteed hourly wage.

Types of projects

On its home page uTest splits projects into five areas: functional testing, user experience (UX), artificial intelligence, accessibility and payments. A functional tester finds bugs and helps get them fixed before an app or device is released to market.

The format varies too: some projects are done at home, some on the go, and some onsite. For a newcomer, the clearest start is functional testing of websites and apps on your own phone or computer.

What uTest pays for

The platform lists several types of payment. Most members start with the first three.

• approved bugs: the payout for each depends on its value to the client
• approved test cases: paid after you complete test cases in a test cycle
• usability surveys: feedback on an application’s user interface
• bonuses: some cycles offer extra pay to specific testers once their reports are approved
• other tasks for experienced testers: writing test cases and automated scripts, security and localisation reports
• bug fix verification: invitations to check whether a bug has been fixed, paid as test cases

What drives the amount

uTest says plainly that the rate is not the same for every cycle. Three things affect it. The first is project complexity. The second is the bug’s value to the client, and value does not always match how severe the bug is technically. The third is your rating: higher-rated testers are paid more.

There is also favourite tester status. If a company picks you as a favourite, you earn an extra 5% on every future bug you submit in its cycles for as long as you remain a favourite. The motto uTest gives newcomers is quality over quantity.

The tester rating

Your rating reflects your activity and the quality of your work in test cycles. Moving up the tiers brings two things: higher payouts and more invitations. In effect, your first months work towards your rating, and rushing out doubtful reports hurts your earnings for a long time.

Experienced members can become a Test Team Lead (TTL). To join the waitlist you need at least 6 months on uTest, 100 approved bug reports, 30 approved test cases and a Bronze, Silver or Gold rating.

What to do after signing up

After you sign up, a New Joiner Checklist appears on your home page. You can do the steps in any order, but do not skip them.

• complete your profile and tick "I don’t have any" for devices and subscriptions you do not own: invitations are based on your profile
• set up your payment method right away, so you are not hunting for it when the first money arrives
• take the uTest Academy courses and join a live training cycle

uTest Academy: free training

uTest Academy is a free programme that teaches testing basics and lets you practise in live test cycles. Courses include text and video instructions, and they also explain how ratings, payouts and favourite tester status work.

For someone with no testing experience, it is the shortest route to your first approved reports. A training cycle shows you what clients consider a good bug report before money depends on it.

How and when uTest pays

Payouts go out twice a month: on the 15th and on the last day of the month. If that date falls on a weekend or a US holiday, payment comes the next business day. Payments usually start in the mid-afternoon US Eastern time, and uTest asks you to allow up to 24 hours before contacting support.

• PayPal or Payoneer: link the account on the Payments page
• Payoneer pays out once you have at least $2 in a period; smaller amounts wait for the next one
• direct bank transfer via Wise in local currency is only for listed countries; Ukraine is not listed, while Poland, Germany and Lithuania are
• Payoneer is no longer supported for testers in the US

uTest from Ukraine: what to know

uTest does not publish a list of excluded countries, so the key question for a Ukrainian is the payout. Wise is not available for Ukraine, which leaves PayPal and Payoneer. uTest warns that both may not be available everywhere and recommends checking the supported methods for your country before choosing.

For Payoneer, uTest specifically asks you to confirm that you can withdraw from Payoneer to your own bank account, since the service is not fully supported everywhere. For PayPal in Ukraine, a temporary arrangement currently waives fees for receiving and for withdrawing to a card without conversion, valid up to and including 30 September 2026, until further notice.

Beware of fake "recruiters"

The platform belongs to Applause App Quality, Inc. The uTest site carries a warning: only provide your information through the platform itself or to official uTest and Applause domains. If someone messages you on a chat app in uTest’s name, offers to get you projects faster or asks for documents outside the platform, stop there.

Real test cycle invitations arrive in your uTest account, and payouts go only to the PayPal, Payoneer or bank account linked inside it.

Pros and cons

uTest is a good choice if you want to try testing and are ready to learn. If you need predictable hourly pay, survey platforms will suit you better.

• con: no fixed rate, and your first weeks may bring no income
• con: the rating grows slowly, and both pay and invitations depend on it
• con: the Wise bank transfer is not available for Ukraine
