Prolific cash out: the £6 minimum, the 72-hour wait and PayPal problems

You can cash out from Prolific once your approved GBP and USD balances together reach £6 or $6, and only to PayPal. Your first four cash-outs, and any cash-out after you change your PayPal address, are 72 hours apart; after that you can cash out once a day, and the money normally reaches PayPal within 24 hours. There are no fixed payout days and no instant tier.
From a finished study to money in PayPal
A Prolific reward goes through two separate waits. The first is the researcher: your submission sits as “awaiting review” until they approve it. Prolific says this usually takes a matter of days, and if the researcher has not acted within 22 days, Prolific approves the submission automatically. Hovering over the “awaiting review” button on your submissions page shows the auto-approval date.
The second wait is the cash-out itself. Once the reward is approved, it moves into your approved balance. When you press cash out, Prolific shows a “Cash out processing” notice, then “Cash out successful”, and deducts the amount from your balance. Prolific’s help centre says the payment arrives in PayPal within 24 hours and usually much sooner, with delays possible around weekends, bank holidays and on higher-value payments.
Only approved money can leave. If a researcher rejects a submission, its reward is removed from pending and never becomes available. That is why a balance that looks large on the dashboard can still leave the cash-out button grey.
- Awaiting review: the researcher has not decided yet; up to 22 days
- Approved: the reward is in your approved balance and counts towards the minimum
- Cash out processing: you have requested the transfer
- Cash out successful: Prolific has sent it; PayPal normally shows it within 24 hours
The £6 minimum: what counts towards it
The threshold is £6 or $6 across both currencies combined. Prolific’s own example is $4 plus £3.50, which is enough. When you cash out, both currency balances go to PayPal together, each in its original currency.
Money in “Waiting for approval” does not count. Neither does the estimated total at the top of the screen, which converts everything into one currency at the day’s exchange rate: it is shown in USD for people with a US address and in GBP for everyone else, so it moves a little from day to day. For the real figures, open the Balance hub, where each currency is listed separately.
The 72-hour cool-off, worked through
Prolific applies a 72-hour gap between cash-outs in two cases: until you have made four cash-outs, and after you add or change your PayPal address. Once the fourth cash-out is done, you can cash out every 24 hours, with the daily limit resetting at midnight UTC. Prolific says these waits are security measures and cannot be shortened or lifted for anyone.
The table below is our own arithmetic on those rules. It assumes you start on day 0 at 10:00 UTC and have at least £6 or $6 approved each time. The point it shows: from your first cash-out, you need at least nine days to reach daily withdrawals.
Two details catch people out. Switching back to a PayPal address you used before still counts as a change and restarts the 72-hour wait. And when Prolific moved its payments to Hyperwallet in 2024, every account was reset to the cool-off, so even long-time participants had to make four new cash-outs before going back to daily ones. If the 72-hour message is still showing a day after your fourth cash-out has cleared the full window, Prolific asks you to contact support.
| Cash-out | Earliest time | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | day 0, 10:00 UTC | first time you reach £6 or $6 approved |
| 2nd | day 3, 10:00 UTC | 72 hours after the 1st |
| 3rd | day 6, 10:00 UTC | 72 hours after the 2nd |
| 4th | day 9, 10:00 UTC | 72 hours after the 3rd |
| 5th and later | once per UTC day | daily limit, resets at midnight UTC |
Set up PayPal so the money is not sent back
Most failed cash-outs come from PayPal settings rather than from Prolific. Your Prolific login email and your PayPal email can be different, but the PayPal address you link must be the primary email of that PayPal account, not a secondary one. Your full name, country of residence and date of birth must match exactly, and the cash-out troubleshooting page also asks for a fully verified PayPal account and a matching residential address.
Turn on both currencies. In PayPal, open Settings, then Payment preferences, then Manage currencies, and make sure USD and GBP are accepted. If your account only holds GBP, a cash-out of £4 and $10 splits: the pounds land straight away, while PayPal emails you to accept the dollars separately. Never press “refuse”: Prolific says a refused payment stops it from sending you that currency again and temporarily disables your cash-outs.
Country rules are strict. US residents need a US-based PayPal account. For everyone else, Prolific’s cash-out guide says the PayPal country must match either your current country of residence or your country of birth. If your PayPal is registered in Algeria, Egypt or Malawi, it needs a linked bank account, and incoming money is moved there automatically.
One PayPal account belongs to one Prolific account. If you link a PayPal that is already attached to another Prolific account, or someone links yours, both accounts are put on hold. After any change you make inside PayPal, re-link it on your Prolific account page so the details sync, and expect a fresh 72-hour wait.
Error codes and grey buttons
Prolific publishes the meaning of the messages you are most likely to see. The fix is usually on your side and takes minutes; contacting support first only adds a day of waiting.
| What you see | Usual cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Grey cash-out button | under £6/$6 approved, already cashed out today, or PayPal details do not match | check the Balance hub, the UTC reset, then name, address and primary email in PayPal |
| “Already cashed out today” | you are still inside a 72-hour cool-off | wait until the full 72 hours have passed |
| PEC-U-0001 | you are outside your country of residence, your country is out of date, or a VPN or iCloud Private Relay hides your location | cash out from home without VPN or Private Relay; update your country if you moved |
| PEC-PPL-1200 | PayPal could not be linked, most often because of iCloud Private Relay | turn off Private Relay, any VPN or proxy, then link again |
| PayPal window does not open | ad or pop-up blocker | disable the blocker or try another browser or device |
A payment that has not arrived or came back
If PayPal shows nothing, look in PayPal under Summary, then Pending. A payment waits there when your account is set to claim payments manually or is not set up for both currencies. You have 30 days to claim it. After that it goes back to Prolific, which says it adds returned money to your account within 5 days of receiving it, and you cash out again. Until the pending payment is claimed or returned, you cannot make a new cash-out.
When PayPal returns a payment for any reason, Hyperwallet, Prolific’s payment processor, switches cash-outs off on your account as a precaution. The three causes Prolific lists are currency settings, an unclaimed payment and a limitation on the PayPal account; the last one only PayPal can lift. If more than 30 days have passed since a cash-out and the money is neither in PayPal nor back in your balance, write to Prolific support through the chat icon.
Sent to the wrong PayPal address? PayPal returns an unclaimed payment after 30 days, and Prolific credits it back during its reconciliation runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so allow 30 to 35 days. Those two weekdays are the only fixed days in Prolific’s payment process, which is probably where claims about “Tuesday and Friday payouts” come from. Ordinary cash-outs do not wait for any weekday.
Fees, currencies and cashing out while travelling
Prolific does not charge a cash-out fee, so the full approved balance leaves your account. PayPal may charge for converting pounds or dollars into your local currency. Each researcher chooses whether to pay in GBP or USD and must pay at least £6.00 or $8.00 an hour; you can take studies in either currency wherever you live.
You must be physically in your listed country of residence to cash out. If you try from abroad, you will most likely see PEC-U-0001, and the advice is simply to wait until you are home. Prolific also warns that taking studies while visiting another country, or through a VPN, will most likely put the account on hold. If you move permanently, contact support with your full new address: the new country must be supported by Prolific, PayPal and Hyperwallet, your PayPal should already match it, and you may be asked to verify your ID again.
What Prolific does not offer, and what works differently elsewhere
There is no instant payout tier, no weekly payout day, no bank transfer and no way to speed up the 24-hour or 72-hour waits. Prolific says cash-outs go only through PayPal, unless it has told you otherwise directly. Even if your account is on hold or an appeal fails, you can still cash out approved money already in your balance.
Respondent shows how different the mechanics can be. It keeps no balance at all, so there is nothing to withdraw: after the researcher confirms you attended, the reward is issued in US dollars within 7 to 10 business days as a Tremendous gift-card link, minus a 5% fee with a $1 minimum. On 2 November 2026 our catalogue listed 785 open Respondent studies with a median reward of $45, which is $42.75 after that fee. One Respondent study pays as much as several weeks of Prolific minimum cash-outs, but you have to pass its screener first.
Questions and answers
What is the minimum cash-out on Prolific?
£6 or $6 in approved balances, counted across both currencies together, for example $4 plus £3.50. Money still awaiting review does not count.
Why do I have to wait 72 hours between Prolific cash-outs?
Your first four cash-outs, and any cash-out after a PayPal change, are 72 hours apart as a security measure. From the fifth on, you can cash out once per UTC day.
How long does a Prolific cash-out take to reach PayPal?
Prolific says within 24 hours and usually much faster. Weekends, bank holidays and larger amounts can add delay.
Does Prolific pay out on fixed days, or offer instant payouts?
No. You choose when to cash out within the 24-hour or 72-hour limits. Tuesday and Thursday are only reconciliation days for payments sent to a wrong PayPal address.
Can I cash out from Prolific while on holiday abroad?
No. You must be in your listed country of residence; from abroad you will most likely see the PEC-U-0001 error.
Can I withdraw Prolific earnings to a bank account?
No. Prolific pays only through PayPal, via its processor Hyperwallet. You can move the money from PayPal to your bank yourself.
