dscout review: diary studies and what they pay

What dscout is

The name stands for "digital scout". Participants are called scouts: you "scout out" new products and services ahead of the pack and record your experiences in the app. The platform says there are tens of thousands of scouts in the United States, the United Kingdom and around the world.

Clients range from household brands to start-ups. Sometimes a mission names the company behind the research, and sometimes the company stays confidential. Topics vary widely, from podcasts and fitness trackers to bedsheets and breakfast food.

Three kinds of missions

dscout has three main formats, and they differ a lot in time and pay.

• Diary mission — one or more activities over several days or weeks; each time you answer the same questions with video, photos and text, and each set of answers is called an entry
• Live — a real-time video session with a researcher, on your phone or computer; you are told in advance which device to use
• Express — short tasks done in one sitting for $2 to $25, with no invitation needed; you must fit the criteria, complete everything and pass an automated quality check

How much dscout pays

The platform says most missions pay between $25 and $150, some more and some less, depending on the time and effort. You see the amount before you start, on the mission card and in its details. Applications are unpaid; dscout compares them to an audition.

Its help centre for researchers shows what drives the amount. dscout suggests $10–50 for most usability tests, $5–20 for media surveys and $50–200 for diary studies. For niche specialists such as executives, clinicians or engineers, it suggests $150–600 for just 15–30 minutes.

How to apply

You find missions in the Explore tab. Open a card, read the details and tap Start Application. Answer carefully: you cannot go back to a previous question. For photo and video questions you can shoot in the app or upload a file from your phone.

Every application is reviewed by a person, either from dscout or from the client company, so review takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. You are not notified if you are not selected: if a week or two passes with no word, you most likely were not picked this time. dscout stresses that this does not mean your application was lacking; they were simply looking for something else.

How to get selected

Reviewers look for authenticity, creativity, attention to detail and good camera work. The platform’s advice is simple.

• apply only to missions that genuinely apply to you: do not apply to a mission about cats if you do not own a cat
• write full answers: a detailed description beats "my cat is old"
• follow the instructions literally: if asked for a video of you playing with your cat, film the play, not a talk about it
• hold the phone steady, mind the lighting and speak clearly
• never record while driving

Diary missions

If you are selected, the invitation appears in the Missions tab. The mission overview shows the activities, number of days, deadlines and reward. Your mission leader reviews your entries and answers questions in messages; they may work for dscout or for the client company.

Payment depends on completing every instruction on time and to a good standard. If you do, the mission leader marks you as approved for payment. So read the overview and each activity’s instructions carefully: that is what your work is checked against.

Express: quick, but not for everyone

Express tasks appear at the top of the Explore tab. To see them, you first need a history of high-quality answers in regular applications. Once you qualify, you have 2 hours to finish, and the time cannot be extended. Payment arrives 8 days after completion, provided your submission passes the quality check.

The most common reasons an Express task goes unpaid: dark or inaudible video, vague or short answers, and lying or trying to game the system. One important limit: according to the Express help article these tasks are available only in the US and UK, and according to the platform’s glossary only to US residents. Changing the country in your profile will not help.

How and when you get paid

dscout pays only through PayPal; there is no alternative. Rewards are issued in US dollars, and PayPal converts them into the default currency of your PayPal account. Some missions list their reward in another currency, which is shown on the mission card.

Payment should arrive within 10 business days of the mission closing. Once your mission leader approves your entries, dscout sends a message in the app and by email with the exact payment date. If the money has not arrived by 5 pm US Central Time on that date, contact [email protected].

If you were invited by an outside recruiter, they may be the one paying rather than dscout: in that case, ask the person who invited you about the timeline.

Why a payout can fail

An email titled "Mission payout failed" means dscout tried to pay you but something got in the way. The platform lists the reasons.

• your PayPal account is locked or inactive
• the email the reward was sent to is not registered with PayPal; add it to your PayPal account as an alias
• the email exists in PayPal but is not confirmed
• the reward is in another currency: log in to PayPal and accept it in your default currency

Requirements: age, phone, identity check

You can create an account from age 13 in the United States and from 16 in Europe, and under 18 only with a parent’s or guardian’s permission. The app runs on an iPhone with iOS 16 or later or on Android 9 or later, with a working camera and microphone. On a tablet you can submit applications and take part in diary missions, but not in Live.

For Live and desktop activities you need a desktop or laptop computer with a camera and microphone and Chrome 80+ or Edge 130+, plus the dscout browser extension for some tasks. Before your first usability test or media survey, the app asks you to verify your identity once through Veriff: a photo ID and a selfie.

dscout for Ukrainians

According to the help centre for researchers, the app works in most countries as long as the device meets the requirements. But recruitment from dscout’s own panel is aimed at the US and UK, while other countries are grouped as "international" participants. So expect noticeably fewer invitations from Ukraine or Poland, and no Express tasks. The platform does not publish a list of countries for sign-up.

Language is another limit. The app interface is translated into German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese and Korean, but not Ukrainian. Researchers write the questions, and most missions are in English. dscout’s support team is US-based and English-speaking. PayPal works for payouts to Ukraine, but remember that free receiving is a temporary PayPal arrangement until 30 September 2026.

Pros and cons

dscout suits people who like filming videos and talking about their lives, and who speak English well.

• pro: most missions pay $25–150, and you see the amount before applying
• pro: an exact payment date in a message, within 10 business days of closing
• pro: everything on your phone, no computer needed for most missions
• con: applications are unpaid and reviewed by hand for up to several weeks
• con: PayPal only, and Express only in the US and UK
